Frequently asked questions
Who was the brain child behind this?
Debra McGill (writer's name) aka Debra Key Newhouse (real name) is the person who came up with the idea for a cookbook to benefit the three charities connected with Outlander. She shared her idea and aspiration with her fellow Outlander Fanmily, who loved the idea. Volunteers began to come together and the Cookbook Committee was formed. The committee is currently comprised of Angie @AngieRigsby, Bev @BevH111, Bouton @Bouton_Barks, Christina @olemiss549, Debra @Debra_McGill (chairperson of committee), Iris @IrisD236, Jenny @jennymcinspired (haggis hunter), Julie @BonnyPortman, Kathryn @CandidKathyrn, Peggy @TheRonTerryShow, Pelly @Pellicott1, Rachel @carpen_rachel, Sara @saraMD15 and Summer @SummerPic
Debra lives in York, Pennsylvania, USA and purchased a cell phone, at her own expense, in case you would like to call her with questions. The number is 717-472-3711. She's available from 9 a.m. EST until 9 p.m. EST. She is sorry, but she cannot return international calls. You can also contact her through firstname.lastname@example.org.
A publishing project of this sort does not get off the ground without financial support. An outlander fan and supporter, who wished to remain anonymous loaned the funds (interest free) to publish this cookbook. This supporter provides a checks and balances for all we do. Be assured we want things to go smoothly both for you and for us.
What charities does the sale of this book benefit?
All proceeds from the sale of this book will be split equally between these three charities
Bloodwise – Formerly known as Leukemia & Lymphoma Research, is the UK’s biggest blood cancer charity. Working to beat, treat, cure and prevent blood cancers. Bloodwise researches, helps, campaigns, shares learning and raises money. Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie Fraser in Starz series Outlander, supports Bloodwise. See https://bloodwise.org.uk/ for more information or to make a direct donation to the organization.
NPH USA – supports Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (Spanish for “our little Brothers & Sisters”) raising children and transforming the lives of more than 3,400 orphaned, abandoned & disadvantaged children, in 9 countries, by providing shelter, food, clothing, healthcare, and education, in a Christian family environment, based on unconditional acceptance, love, sharing, working and responsibility. Diana Gabaldon, author of the Outlander book series, supports NPH USA. See https://www.nphusa.org/ for more information or to make a direct donation to the organization.
World Child Cancer – Their mission is to improve cancer diagnosis, treatment and care for children across the developing world. Caitriona Balfe, who plays Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser on Starz Outlander, is the Patron of World Child Cancer. See http://www.worldchildcancer.org/ for more info or to make a direct donation to the organization.
When will I get my book?
The book is currently being published. The cookbooks will arrive in York, Pennsylvania, USA, on November 12, 2015. ALL pre-orders will be mailed on November 13, 2015 because YES, we are that organized! If this should change, for any reason, we will let you know. These cookbooks will make great Holiday gifts for Outlander and cookbook fans as well as maybe finding a new recipe to try for the American Thanksgiving holiday.
Also see our Special offers section. All cookbooks ordered during the pre-order phase earn a chance at winning a Hamilton and Young Outlander inspired wedding rings necklace.
How do I know you aren't scamming me or getting my credit card information?
Because all proceeds are going to be donated to three charities and are not for our profit, we wanted to ensure that there could be no mishandling or misappropriation of funds and to be able to have the documentation to verify this. We've all seen charity scams and are appalled by them. We want to ensure that we can provide documentation, accountability and transparency. These three expenses will be subtracted from proceeds: Morris Cookbook publishing costs, credit card processing fees (either PayPal or Stripe) and shipping (U.S. or worldwide). All remaining proceeds will be divided equally and donated between the three charities (Bloodwise, NPH and World Child Cancer).
Regarding your credit card information. Both PayPal and Stripe are verified credit card processing services. They process your credit card information, we do not. We do not see any information regarding your credit card. Your payment is processed by either PayPal or Stripe (your choice) and they will forward your payment to the Cooklander account. We will then ship your order to the address you provide, when the books are available.
What if my credit card or PayPal doesn't work?
Please call your credit card company or PayPal first. Thus far, that has resolved all issues as we have no way of correcting any issues your credit card or your PayPal account may have, such as mailing address, etc. Also, try using another computer. Sometimes things don't work on your cell phone, but will work on your laptop. If all else fails, contact Debra at email@example.com or give her a call.
How many recipes and how many contributors?
550 recipes and nearly 300 contributors from every continent except Antarctica.
What kind of recipes are in the cookbook?
Here are copies of the table of contents and the index of recipes from the cookbook (images are from the Morris cookbook proof copy-will update when the printed copy becomes available)
Who is the publisher of this cookbook and who is the contact person for the cookbook?
Morris Press Cookbooks ( http://www.morriscookbooks.com/ ) was the publisher chosen for this cookbook. They are well designed, specialize in fundraising cookbooks and the best prices for publishing cookbooks of this sort. Debra McGill aka Debra Key Newhouse (chairperson) is the designated person who has accepted the responsibility for ensuring the publication of this cookbook, the acceptance of the shipment of books and will be responsible for packaging and shipping all orders. We give a big thank you to her and her husband Tony for undertaking the distribution of the cookbook. They are old pros considering they shipped an entire plane load of supplies to a refugee camp in Hungary (Google Goodbye Hungaria).
Are there Gluten Free Recipes? What other kind of recipes?
Yes, there are gluten free recipes and these are all indicated by G/F symbol. There are also Vegan recipes, Meat lover recipes, sugary treats, and special menus with recipes dedicated to Caitriona Balfe (gluten free), Sam Heughan (paleo), Tobias Menzies (Carbonara & a unique salad), and Graham McTavish (a lover of seafood). The categories in Cooklander: To the Stove! are Appetizers, Beverages both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, Soups & Salads, Vegetables & Side Dishes, Main Dishes (our most popular category), some wonderful Breads & Rolls, Desserts, Cookies & Candy, and a wonderful eclectic group of recipes called This & That. Of course we have Haggis of all kinds (thanks to Jenny Mc), and a few surprise recipes (do check out Donas the Horse, beautiful horse with a wonderfully evil sense of humor), and a recipe aimed at Sam Heughan from his good friend Jamie Lee-Hill.
Why do the worldwide shipping books cost more and can I purchase more than the 2 pack of books?
Unfortunately it costs significantly more to ship books to areas outside of the U.S. We have attempted to defray as much of this cost as possible by limiting each shipment package to 4lb (2 books). However we are glad to ship you as many of these, 2 book packages, as you would like to purchase.
